Tempera paint is a more affordable choice to use when beginning a painting project. The colors are vivid and include multiple variations as well as shade of colors. Best of all the paint is nontoxic which is beneficial for parents and teachers. When painting with children you will want to gravitate towards tempera seeing that it is safe plus washes off easier than other paints. Even professional artists use tempera paint but use the variation called egg tempera which is colored pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder medium such as egg yolk. Egg tempera is quick drying and permanent which is why it was used widely in first century paintings. Some of these paintings have lasted for many centuries but eventually egg tempera paint was replaced by oil based paints. When painting with tempera, try to always be prepared since it is fast drying. By preparing your materials ahead of time you will be able to work with tempera much easier and do not forget to have cups of water nearby for easy cleaning. Remember to clean your brushes in between color changes to avoid unintended mixing of the colors.
